酋長 Chieftain

台灣原住民中，只有雅美尚停留在採集生產方式謀生，所以沒有頭目，其他各族均有部落領袖制度，各族的共通點是：以老人統治為原則，各族在頭目之下，有部落長老會議，以調解族人的糾紛，或是主持土地的分配與婚嫁慶典、出獵儀式等，另外還要負責整個族群的安全，遇到敵人入侵時，更要帶領族人抵禦外侮，通常酋長的頭上配戴五隻羽毛的頭飾，這種頭飾是權威的象徵。

Only the Yami is a society with no chieftain. Other Taiwan aboriginal tribes have their own chieftains. Usually the chief is a senior man who holds the position by common consensus, and under him there are a council of elders who settle disputes, oversee the distribution of land or officiate at ceremonies or weddings. Only a chieftain can have a five-feather crown – a symbol of power.
